Stable milk production requires a stable feeding system. Punjab has productive fodder seasons, but farms still face gaps caused by weather, land limitations, price changes and poor storage.

Calculate annual dry-matter demand

Estimate requirements for lactating animals, dry animals, heifers and calves. Feed planning should use animal weight, production stage and ration formulation rather than a single amount for the whole herd.

Use silage as risk management

Well-made maize or other suitable silage can preserve feed for periods when fresh fodder is limited. Harvest timing, chopping, compaction, sealing and feed-out management determine quality. Air entering the stack can cause heating and spoilage.

Balance the ration

Green fodder or silage alone may not meet energy, protein, fibre, mineral and vitamin needs. Work with a qualified animal nutrition professional and test feed ingredients when possible. Sudden ration changes can affect intake and rumen health.

Protect feed from losses

Stores should remain dry and protected from rain, rodents and contamination. Use first-in, first-out stock rotation. Weigh deliveries and maintain daily issue records so unexplained losses are visible.

Water is part of the ration

Clean water availability directly affects intake and milk production. Test questionable sources and clean troughs regularly.

Measure performance

Track feed cost per litre, milk yield, body condition, refusals and health events. These indicators help determine whether a ration is both nutritionally effective and financially sustainable.

Feed security should be confirmed before herd expansion. Buying more animals without securing quality feed can reduce production and increase health costs across the entire farm.
