Breed selection should match climate, feed quality, staff skill and the milk market. There is no single best animal for every farm in Pakistan.
Sahiwal cattle
Sahiwal cattle are valued for heat tolerance, adaptability and locally recognised genetics. Individual production varies, so selection must focus on health, udder condition, lactation records and the reliability of the seller rather than appearance alone.
Crossbred dairy cows
Crossbred animals can produce higher milk volumes under strong management. They generally require consistent nutrition, cooling, reproductive management and disease prevention. Farms with unreliable feed or limited heat control should avoid assuming high textbook yields.
Nili-Ravi buffaloes
Buffalo milk is often preferred for its higher fat and suitability for yogurt, tea, sweets and traditional dairy products. Buffaloes need effective cooling and water access during hot weather. Their production cycle and market premium should be included in financial planning.
Use records, not labels
Review calving history, milk records, body condition, mastitis history, vaccination status and reproductive performance. A qualified veterinarian should examine animals before purchase. Quarantine new stock before mixing it with the main herd.
Consider a mixed strategy carefully
A mixed herd may serve different customers but also adds complexity to feeding, breeding, milk segregation and processing. Start with the system your team can manage consistently.
The best purchase is not necessarily the animal with the highest claimed yield. It is the healthy, verified animal whose needs fit your farm’s feed, housing, climate controls and business model.
