Milk quality is influenced by animal health, milking hygiene, equipment cleanliness, time and temperature. A clean-looking product is not enough; the farm needs repeatable procedures and records.

Prepare animals and staff

Use clean hands or gloves, clean equipment and a consistent udder-preparation routine. Identify and separate abnormal milk according to veterinary and food-safety guidance. Staff should understand why each step matters.

Use food-grade equipment

Milk-contact surfaces should be suitable for food use, smooth, cleanable and maintained. Cracked containers, unsuitable plastics and damaged seals create hygiene risks.

Cool milk quickly

Rapid cooling slows microbial growth. The exact time and temperature controls should follow applicable standards, the processing method and professional food-safety advice. Record temperatures rather than relying on touch.

Clean the complete system

Cleaning includes cans, pipes, tanks, pasteurizers, fillers and storage areas. Cleaning-in-place systems require correct chemical concentration, temperature, contact time and rinsing. Procedures must protect workers and prevent chemical residues.

Protect the cold chain

Chilled products must remain at controlled temperatures during storage, loading and delivery. Insulated or refrigerated transport, route planning and customer handling instructions support shelf life.

Test and document

Use appropriate quality testing for the product and legal context. Maintain batch, temperature, cleaning and complaint records. Traceability allows the business to investigate problems and protect customers.

Processors should consult qualified food technologists and the relevant provincial and national authorities before commercial production.
